Armed Cock kills man in CA.

By Bart Jackson, Vancouver Sun

Fighting cocks.
An angry bird has killed a spectator in California.
The cock, wearing a razor sharp knife, sliced a man in the leg. Thirty-five-year-old Jose Luis Ochoa was taken to the ER and succumbed to his injuries about two hours later, the Bakersfield Californian reported.
The cause of death was a severe injury to the man's right calf, an autopsy report said Wednesday.
Cockfights, illegal in California, features blade arrayed roosters that are goaded to attack each other. The fights, which attract wagers from spectators, often end in the death of one of the birds.
"I have never seen this type of incident," Sgt. Martin King, a 24-year veteran of the Kern County Sheriff's Dept. told the Californian. "People have been known to bleed out from those injuries if medical attention is not obtained immediately."
The officer said the doomed Ochoa and others made a hasty retreat from the cockfight arena when police arrived on the scene.
Humane society executive John Goodwin said a main reason for cockfighting's continuance in the state is the lenient law. Cockfights, raising the birds and watching the fights are misdemeanors.
The fights lure spectators from several neighboring states where the practice is a felony.
Goodwin told the paper that the bettors' pot in even a small cockfight can reach $10,000. "The money adds up fast, and that's why we need strong penalties," Goodwin said. "For a law to be a deterrent, the penalty has to be greater than the gain of breaking the law."
The blade-bearing roosters often fight while hopped up on antibiotics and steroids.More...

Catalina Grand Prix
The Catalina Grand Prix is a closed-course event. The approximate 7 mile course will include natural, graded, and paved terrain (80% dirt, 20% paved).  Riders are considered finishers provided they make 50% of their class leader's laps and receive the checkered flag. Due to circumstances on the island, there will be no practice and all motorcycles will be impounded, except for the actual race.

Driver held in Calif motorcycle crash...

SAN DIEGO (AP)-A man was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence after he slammed his car head-on into a group of motorcycle riders celebrating their club's 10th anniversary, killing four motorcyclists and his companion, authorities said Sunday. But they also are looking for another driver who they say played a role in the crash.Carlos Ramirez Bobadilla, 36, was arrested when officers smelled alcohol on his breath about five hours after the Saturday crash, said California Highway Patrol Officer DeeAnn Goudie. Ramirez, one of six injured in the collision on a remote desert highway, was recovering from hand fractures at a San Diego hospital, Goudie said. Results of a blood test were pending, and it was unclear if the driver's alleged alcohol consumption contributed to the collision, Goudie said, but he was arrested on a misdemeanor and is not being held responsible for the deaths based on evidence collected so far.Authorities were looking for the driver of a gold Honda Civic who forced Ramirez off the road when trying to pass the motorcyclists on the undivided two-lane highway east of San Diego.

Five killed in California crash
(CNN) -- Five people were killed and six others seriously injured when a car struck a group of 12 motorcycles on a California desert highway Saturday.
"I was one of the first emergency officials on the scene. Of my 23 years on the department, it was the most devastating scene I've been to, and I've seen a lot of fatal accidents," said Deeann Goudie, a spokeswoman for the California Highway Patrol.
Police are searching for another car, which left the scene of the afternoon accident.
Goudie said they got a 911 call from one of the motorcyclists. The motorcycles were on a highway in El Centro, Imperial County, just east of San Diego, when a gold Honda Civic tried to pass them, police said.Goudie said the Honda passed the motorcycles, but a Dodge Avenger swerving to avoid hitting the Honda struck the motorcycles head on.Four motorcyclists and a passenger in the Avenger died on the scene. Five of the six people injured were in serious condition, Goudie said."The gold Honda Civic left the scene without stopping and police want to talk with that driver," Goudie said. "We're looking for a 1995 to 2000 model-year gold Honda Civic."
The bikers are part of the Saddle Tramps motorcycle group in Lakeside, California. They were taking a casual ride on their Harley-Davidsons to celebrate the group's 10th anniversary.

SB435 has been before the California legislature for some time and various motorcycle groups have been involved in its discussion, most opposed.
If this bill is signed into law by the governor you can expect it to be tried in other parts of the country.
Will this bill affect you or someone you know?
If you live in California and or know people who do, have them write, e-mail or phone the Governor’s office and ask him not to sign this into law.
If you do Not Live in CA contact the governor and let him know you have seen his television ads about visiting California and though you are considering it you will not if you can not ride your motorcycle there because of this law.
The fact that the Governor does own motorcycles does not mean he will not sign this bill into law. Remember it will not affect him or his motorcycles as no cop that wants to keep his job will ticket him.

SACRAMENTO — California lawmakers want to put a plug in the earsplitting roar from modified motorcycles.
The state Senate today voted 21-16 to pass SB435. The bill makes it a crime to operate a motorcycle manufactured after Jan. 1, 2013, that fails to meet federal noise-emission control standards.
Motorcyclists whose vehicles lack the proper U.S. Environmental Protection Agency label would be subject to a fine.
Supporters say many motorcycle owners modify their bikes to make them much louder, which in turn creates a public nuisance. Those modifications also allow the motorcycle to produce more harmful emissions.
Opponents of the bill say many aftermarket exhaust systems meet emission standards but aren’t labeled, meaning law-abiding riders could be unfairly ticketed.
The bill now goes to Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, who owns multiple motorcycles.
